Exploratory Laparotomy

Exploratory Laparotomy is done when a patient has unexplained pain or when a mass is discovered. It is the opening of the abdomen to visualize and examine abdominal contents. When possible, the mass in question is removed. It is an inpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia.

Open Cholecystectomy

Open Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder through about a 5 inch incision across the upper abdomen. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and you normally have to stay in the hospital a couple days. The gallbladder is removed due to chronic inflammation and/or gallstones. Recovery period can last anywhere from four to eight weeks.
